The story of Delta Phi Lambda at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) began in October 2010 when Chee Ia Yang recognized that Asian American students lacked involvement and unity within the community. In response, she sought Greek Life as a means to increase participation and unite the diverse ethnicities within the Asian American community. Over the next several months, Chee Ia actively recruited women to join her cause. Along the way, she met Quoc Anh (Ann) Nguyen, who would help lead the young Interest Group. On September 6, 2011, Chee Ia and Ann registered the Interest Group as an officially recognized student organization. With a membership of thirteen women, the Organization of Asian Students Inspiring Sisterhood (OASIS) firmly established a presence at UNCC.
Like many organizations, OASIS faced challenges throughout its development. Over time, several individuals withdrew their membership for various personal reasons. In addition, OASIS struggled to identify which national Asian-interest sorority would best fit the needs of their members and the UNCC community. Although these challenges were seemingly insurmountable, the most dedicated members persevered. By the end of September 2011, OASIS grew to 10 committed members: Chee Ia Yang, Mai (May) Vang, Ann Nguyen, Shua Vang, Nou Yang, Pamela Pedersen, Camarin Chargualaf, Lyna Cao, Elaine Phong, and Dabin Kwon. These 10 women became the core of OASIS as the group pursued their ultimate goal: Sisterhood.
Thereafter, the members of OASIS became active in hosting, organizing, and participating in student events throughout the community. Such events included: the International Festival, the Multicultural Leadership Conference, and the MLK Jr. Lighting Ceremony. In addition, OASIS volunteered for AVON's Walk for Breast Cancer, Adopt-a-Family, and Hope Haven's Trunk or Treat events.
Through active involvement with the campus community, the women of OASIS shared countless hours eating, laughing, crying, studying, and, most importantly, bonding together. The unique memories shared among each member would become the foundation of their Sisterhood. Inspired by their perseverance and unbreakable bond, OASIS identified Delta Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. as the sorority that best reflects their values, principles, and ideals.
On April 15, 2012, guided by Elizabeth Thai and Ailien Vuong, the women of OASIS chartered the fourteenth chapter of Delta Phi Lambda. The founding members were Chee Ia Yang, Mai (May) Vang, Quocanh (Ann) Nguyen, Shua Vang, Nou Yang, Pamela Pedersen, Camarin Chargualaf, Lyna Cao, Elaine Phong, and Dabin Kwon. United as Sisters of Delta Phi Lambda, these women will empower future generations to uphold the mission of Delta Phi Lambda and positively impact the UNCC community.
